Marine & Ocean Vessel

Petroleum products are vital in maritime industries, powering ships and lubricating onboard machinery. Clark Labs offers quality testing for marine equipment, ensuring reliability and performance. With a range of services, they provide peace of mind to vessel operators regarding operability and reliability.

Ocean & Marine Reliabilty Programs

Oil & lubrication reliability testing for the ocean vessel & marine industry

Petroleum products play a crucial role in the maritime and marine equipment industry from powering ships to providing lubrication for various onboard machinery and equipment.  Clark Laboratories supports marine equipment manufacturers and maritime operators for quality, reliability and performance testing.  Clark’s broad array of oil, lubrication and fuel testing services provides ship and marine vessel operators piece of minds for operability and reliability.

Often the main cause of vessel downtime is the lack of scheduled maintenance meeting operational requirements of the equipment. Many vessel owners and operators follow maintenance schedules based on the operational hours of each piece of equipment. Maintenance stops are chosen when running hours hit predefined levels, whether equipment needs servicing or not. There is value in utilizing this method for preventative maintenance and reliability. However, if a regular monitoring schedule is followed to measure the health of the equipment while operating, this could provide critical data ensuring the reliability of equipment and potentially eliminate or mitigate costly downtime.

Marine equipment is constantly exposed to harsh and corrosive environments. Corrosion, oxidation, and contamination are a constant threat to the health and continuous operation of shipboard equipment. Clark’s analytical oil testing services for engine oil, hydraulic systems, lubrication systems, grease, and diesel fuel provide critical data to ensure your equipment is in optimal condition for reliable performance.

Our Services

Diesel Fuel Testing

  • Quality Testing: Clark’s diesel fuel testing involves analyzing the physical and chemical properties of diesel fuel to ensure it meets industry standards and regulatory requirements. Key parameters include cetane number, sulfur content, density, viscosity, and flash point.
  • Contaminant  Analysis: Diesel fuel can be contaminated with water, particulates, microbes, and other impurities, which can lead to engine damage and performance issues. Testing involves detecting and quantifying these contaminants.
  • Compatibility Testing: Ensuring that the diesel fuel is compatible with the engine and any fuel treatment additives used onboard is essential for optimal performance and preventing issues like corrosion and fuel system fouling.

Lubricating Oil Testing

  • Viscosity Analysis: Lubricating oils must maintain the correct viscosity under operating conditions to provide effective lubrication and protect engine components from wear.
  • Contaminant Analysis: Similar to diesel fuel, lubricating oil can become contaminated with water, fuel, combustion byproducts, and particulates. Testing involves detecting these contaminants and assessing their impact on lubricant performance.
  • Additive Analysis: Lubricating oils contain additives that enhance their performance, such as detergents, dispersants, and anti-wear agents. Testing ensures the proper concentration and effectiveness of these additives.
  • Wear Debris Analysis: Monitoring the presence of wear particles in lubricating oil can provide insights into the condition of engine components and help predict maintenance needs.

Marine Fuel and Oil Analysis Programs

  • Many maritime organizations implement routine fuel and oil analysis programs to monitor the condition and performance of these critical fluids. These programs typically involve periodic sampling and testing of fuel and oil samples from various onboard systems.
  • Advanced techniques such as spectroscopy, chromatography, and microscopy are commonly used for detailed analysis of fuel and oil samples.
  • Some testing may be conducted onboard using portable analysis equipment, while more comprehensive analysis may be performed in shore-based laboratories.

Regulatory Compliance

  • The marine industry is subject to various regulations governing fuel quality, emissions, and environmental protection. Testing ensures compliance with these regulations and helps identify any potential issues before they lead to regulatory violations or operational problems.
